Clemens Center hosts annual Back Stage Pass Gala
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Over 100 people attended the Back Stage Pass Gala at the Clemens Center in Elmira Saturday night. People could walk the red carpet when they came in, eat with friends and coworkers, and see what it's like to be back stage.
"This is our one and only in-person fundraiser, everything else is done virtually. We like to have folks come out and really enjoy themselves and get to know the Clemens Center and our staff and volunteers a lot better," said Executive Director for the Clemens Center, Karen Cromer.
Along the tour, people could see the dressing rooms, pit where the orchestra performs, and listen to an organist. Each keyboard on the organ has 61 keys, and can imitate many orchestra instruments.
"It was designed for this building in 1925, custom built. It’s been through many changes since then. The instrument is important because it’s one of the few that’s in its original home. Many of these have been “transplanted” or broken up for parts and put back together and installed," said Organist, David Peckham.
The goal for the fundraiser is to raise $70,000. Numerous businesses and corporations attended the event to have fun and donate to the Clemens Center. While the money goes towards improving the building itself, it's also a way to give back to the community.
"The Clemens Center is a fixture in the community, it has been since 1925 when the original theater was built. We're very proud to be a part of this historic theater. We generate a lot of income back to the community," said Cromer.
Cromer added the vendors and businesses involved in the Gala rely on the Clemens Center to have tourists, and guests stay in Elmira. "They spend money while they’re here at those businesses and we like to be a part of that...Be the catalyst for a lot of the economic development in the city. Contributing to the Clemens Center not only supports the arts for the whole community and our quality of life here; but it really keeps people busy and employed, and that’s what we need to do. We need to keep busy, entertain, and employ."
If you missed out on Saturday's Gala fundraiser, you can still donate. The Clemens Center Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
