ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - The Elmira Pioneers are headed to the PGCBL Championship series for the first time since 2013. Now, they set their sights on bringing home the league title this week.

The Pioneers topped Jamestown in Sunday's first round, then captured the West Division title after Monday night's win over the Auburn Doubledays.

Elmira will face off against East Division Champion, the Amsterdam Mohawks. Amsterdam won a 3-2 thriller in extra innings against the Utica Blue Sox on Tuesday. Amsterdam has been dominant all season, they finished the regular season 36-5 overall while Elmira sits at 27-17-1.

"I've told the boys from day one that I think we have a championship-caliber team here. We have good pitching, good defense" said Pioneers' Manager, Andrew Drum. "It was emotional here last night. The crowd was loud, both sides were loud. When we got that win, this place just erupted so it's been an awesome journey, and the twenty-two guys that are still here, they're ready to grind and bring home a championship."

"Quite honestly, I think it would just be something to be proud of," said outfielder and Elmira Notre Dame grad, Erik Charnetski. "We've all been working and we're all baseball players wanting to be the best we can every day and part of that means winning so if we're going to go out and win and have some fun playing baseball, the sport we love, we're going to do it."

Elmira will travel to Amsterdam for game one on Wednesday, then will host the Mohawks for game two on Thursday. Game three, if necessary, will be played in Amsterdam.

"We have a great environment here at the Dunn and in Elmira" added Infielder Joe Muzio. "You go into stores with Pios stuff on, people recognize you, people love seeing you at the field. I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else with any other group of people. I like our squad and I like our environment, and I think every team has a tough time playing here because of that because they see it too."

First pitch for game two at Dunn Field on Thursday is scheduled for 6:35 PM. Tickets are free courtesy of Hilliard Corporation.
