10:50 A.M. UPDATE 09/06/2023 -- Elmira police have identified the man found under the Walnut Street Bridge as 42-year-old Christopher C. Wheeler from Steuben County. Police say the next of kin has been contacted and the investigation is ongoing. 

Police say there aren't any further details being released at this time.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Friday, September 1st the Elmira Police Department was called to the area of the North end of the Walnut Street Bridge for a report of a “man down.” Upon arrival, police said they found a deceased white man who was about 40 years old. 

Police say no foul play is suspected and the investigation is ongoing. 

While the police were on scene, they closed the southbound lane of the Walnut Street Bridge. 

EPD said the man appeared to be living under the north side of the bridge and are asking for the public’s help in identifying him.
