Corning and Elmira football ready to clash for Section Title
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) - It's Section Title week on the gridiron in the Southern Tier. In Class AA, Corning and Elmira will go head to head again for a Sectional crown.
The Hawks (4-4) and Express (4-5) will clash in Corning on Friday evening at 6 PM. Elmira cruised to a 61-12 win over Binghamton in the semifinal round last weekend while Corning had a first-round bye into the championship game.
When these two teams met on October 20th, Corning topped Elmira, 31-8.
"You've got to do some things a little bit different, you've got to clean up some of the mistakes that you made in the previous game," said Corning Head Coach Mike Johnston. "Evan Garvin got hurt early in the game and he's the difference maker for them, and he accounted for six touchdowns for them last week when they put up 61 so we know we're going to have our hands full this week."
Corning finished their season strong, winning four of their last five games. Now the Hawks have their eye on another trip to the state tournament.
"I feel like we've got a good bit of momentum going right now," said junior quarterback Ian Harpster. "We're trying to carry that into this week to keep our energy up, keep playing positive, keep our heads up high if something goes wrong, and just play what we can and do our best."
Elmira Head Coach, Jimmy McCauley says his team has been resilient all year long. The team talked about facing Corning for a second time and what it would mean to bring home a Sectional Title.
"They are extremely potent on offense, they've got skill guys that can score in the middle, score on the outside, quarterback can throw it a little bit, defense is good, they've got a good kicker. He's been showing that he can do his thing too so in all three phases, we're going to have to play pretty well" McCauley said.
"It would mean everything to me and everything to all of these guys on the team and everything to the program and the culture," said senior quarterback Evan Garvin. "It's for the guys not only playing here with us tomorrow but guys that have been through the program and who have won the medal and guys who haven't."
