WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y (WENY) -- Tops Friendly Markets have announced that today is the start of their annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign. The program will allow shoppers to donate to local food banks including the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

The program runs from January 21st to February 10th. During the Campaign, shoppers at any of the 148 Tops locations will have the opportunity to donate two, three, or five dollars at checkout. All you have to do is tell the cashier that you'd like to make a donation.

In their "Food 2 Families" and "Food for Families" campaigns from late last year, Tops confirmed that over 2.5 million pounds of food was collected and donated to food banks across New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

“We want to thank the community for their generosity,” said Tops president, Ron Ferri. “We are committed to helping battle food insecurity and couldn’t do it without the wonderful donations of food and funding we receive during these campaigns. We ask that if you are able, please continue to help support your fellow neighbors in need next time you check out at Tops.”

There are multiple Tops locations within the Twin Tiers that shoppers can donate at. These locations include Bath, Canton, Big Flats, Elmira, Lansing, Penn Yan, Riverside, Sayre, Towanda, Troy, Watkins Glen, Wellsboro, and Westfield.
