CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The 'Full STEAHM Ahead!' Summer Workshop is a program designed by Corning Community College to get middle school-aged girls involved in and interested in the math and science career fields. STEAHM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, health and math.

The program is continuing after the United Nations reported that one-third of the workforce in STEM fields was made up of women. After that report, CCC looked at their class makeup, finding even less representation.

"We actually have more female students at the college in general, but less of them were in STEM fields," said Jennifer Sellers, director of Innovative Learning Sites at Corning Community College. "Some of those programs within those areas had zero female students. Some of them had, like, three."

This year, the week-long workshop will cover programming, astronomy, the Fibonacci Sequence and anti-bullying.

"If we got them interested in STEM earlier... they were more likely to pursue it as a program in college, and more likely to pursue it as a career when they leave," Sellers said.

Applications are open right now for interested families in Chemung, Steuben and Schuyler Counties, by going to this website. Families in other counties are allowed to apply for the program, but they must reach out to officials before applying. Applications are due by June 17. The program costs $100.

The STEAHM program runs from August 5 to August 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for girls completing or entering 4th and 5th grade.
