CHEMUNG COUNTY, NY (WENY) -- The Chemung County Library District and the Chemung County Historical Society teamed up to present 'Researching Your Home: Finding Its History' on Thursday afternoon. The event was a way for people to learn about what kind of homes are in the area, what kind of homes they might have, and where they can go to find out more about their homes.

"We talked about how to research the history of your home [and who owned it previously.] [People] were also there to [learn] how the house had changed over time. We talked about the different resources available at the Chemung County Historical Society, the Steele Memorial Society, and the Chemung County Clerk's Office," said Rachel Dworkin, an archivist for the Chemung County Historical Society.

Dworkin said if you're trying to find out the history of your home, the best place to start is at the County Clerk's office. She said that's where you can find land records. She said if you're interested in learning more about the history of the owners of the home, she suggests checking out your local historical society and public library.

Dworkin talked about the different styles of homes in Chemung County and what houses were popular during different time periods.

"In Elmira, we have a lot of Italianate homes that were popular from the 1840s through the 1880s. We have a lot of Queen Anne homes that were popular from the 1880s through the early 1910s," said Dworkin.

Italianate homes have low-pitched roofs with overhanging eaves and tall, narrow windows with crowns. Queen Anne homes are asymmetric, have textured roofs or walls, and have porches.
