Village of Watkins Glen Board of Trustees approves resolution in opposition to sand and gravel pit expansion

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- A sand and gravel pit is looking to expand in Schuyler County, and it has been met with some push back from the public. On Tuesday night, the Village of Watkins Glen Board of Trustees passed a resolution opposing the expansion.

The sand and gravel pit is run by the company Its Green Now and it borders Watkins Glen State Park and Route 409.  The pit is a little over 14 acres now, and the proposal is for the pit to expand to 75 acres. The resolution passed tonight is in opposition of this expansion, and is asking the DEC for more time to review the proposal. Right now, there is a 28 day public comment period, and the board is asking for a 90 day consideration.

One of the trustees explained the purpose that this resolution serves.

"Hopefully, we're hoping that it will convince lawmakers of the government, of the Governor, whoever we need to have, say to the DEC, you know, you need to give these people the 90 day time period so that we can adequately look it over and, like I said, have experts make sure that everything's in alignment," said Trustee Margaret Schimizzi.

Public comments about the expansion are due by February 28th
