HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Mark your calendars to fundraise for New York State's Police Troop E's K-9 unit. The 10th annual Paws for Laws event is happening on Saturday, May 18th from 12-6 pm at the Horseheads Elks Club.

Renee Chalk, the event organizer, is passionate about supporting the canine division, "I'm doing a fundraiser for the New York State Police Canine Division. I try to raise funds to help offset any costs that the handler may incur in having a canine as their partner."

Chalk added that the dogs that are becoming K-9s have quite the background before they even meet their handler, "Most of the dogs that we get are from Holland. They're not local dogs. When they bring them in they can be anywhere from a year and a half let me take that back. They can be anywhere from eight months old up to a year and a half two years. They come trained so they have gotten some training there, so they're trained in two different languages. Usually, when they do come here, the dog and the handler that they're assigned to are then taken to Cooperstown, New York, and there's a training facility there, and the dog and the handler have to stay there for four months to bond and work together and then they get more training there together," says Chalk.

Admission to the event is $15, or $10 with the donation of a bag of dog or cat food which will be donated back to the shelters. Details about the event can be found in the Facebook post attached below.
