ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Dozens of volunteers were in East Elmira on the morning of Friday, June 14th in an effort to give the community a good polish. The work was being done as part of the 6th annual Cities Rise, which is a partnership between the City of Elmira and the Chemung County Habitat for Humanity.

"We are fighting a lot of blight and deteriorating conditions in the City of Elmira, programs like this allow us to get together with citizens to make the city a better place," said Reverend Gary Brinn, 4th District Elmira City Councilman.

The work was done in the area of Grand Central Avenue, Norton Street and more. Volunteers were seen picking up litter, helping with yard work and minor painting and repairs.

And the work isn't done yet, volunteers will be back at it again on the morning of Saturday, June 14th on the same streets.
