ELMIRA. N.Y. (WENY) -- The local nonprofit Runway for a Cause is gearing up for a summer fundraising event, the Fashion Forward 5k.  Runway for a Cause is a volunteer organization that aims to provide an outlet for local creative artists to showcase their talents while giving back to the community.

"We're definitely looking for people of all walks of life, especially those who like to support different creatives and artists," said Stephanie Saunders, the events and fundraising coordinator from Runway for a Cause.

The Fashion Forward 5k is happening at Eldridge Park on July 13th.  It costs $35 to register, with some swag included.  Kids under 12 are free with a registered participant.  Organizers say dressing up is encouraged at this 5k.  Anything from wacky fits to chic style is encouraged, with the chance to walk the runway yourself at the end.

"We're going to be constructing a small 20 foot runway that we're inviting all of our attendees that run our 5K, or walk, because you can do both to actually, to walk our runway after they cross the finish line for the cameras," said Saunders.

Usually Runway for a Cause chooses a local organization or charity to donate to.  Last year, the chosen organization was Casa of the Southern Tier.  This year, Runway for a Cause is taking a new approach.

"The funds that we're raising with the benefit with the 5K as well as the fashion show in November, are actually going to go to providing scholarships for different creatives from within the fashion community," added Saunders.

Sign ups for the Fashion Forward 5k can be found here.  Registration can also be done on July 13th at Eldridge Park at 8:30 a.m.  The Fashion Forward 5k starts at 9:30 a.m.
