HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- This weekend will mark 60 years of continuous classical choral music performed by the Cantata singers.

"60 is not a small number," says Director Will Wickham. "The group has been around since 1964. And what a special way to celebrate by also including in the celebration the end of a two-year grant that has provided a whole set of new pieces of music, including both choir and orchestra, so it's just a great thing to look forward to."

The group invites everyone to the Nasser Civic Center Skating Ring in Corning on Saturday, July 13th for a day full of music and the opportunity to participate in a vocal workshop.

"We're having an open dress rehearsal, which means that we're doing the program basically in the morning, and if folks can come in the morning but can't come in the afternoon, they're welcome to just show up and sit and listen. It may be not as fancy as the performance, but it's going to be great. In the afternoon we're sponsoring a free vocal workshop for folks who want to learn how to sing. It might be for folks who already sing and want to be able to do it better, or it might be for folks who just want to explore it, and that's free. And then the concert starts at 4.30, also free.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and a picnic basket if they want.

The upcoming event is free and features nine works created specifically for this concert.
