ALBANY, NY (WENY)--WHEN KIDS GO THROUGH THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM IN THE EMPIRE STATE, THE COURTS OFTEN ORDER SERVICES BE GIVEN TO KIDS STRUGGLING TO OBTAIN BASIC RESOURCES.

THE SERVICES CAN RANGE FROM MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING TO GETTING HELP buying CLOTHES OR obtaining A DRIVERS LICENSE.

BUT OFTEN TIMES foster KIDS DON’T ACTUALLY receive THE SERVICES THEY WERE PROMISED.

A BILL AWAITING THE GOVERNOR’S APPROVAl, NICKNAMED THE 'SAFE LANDINGS ACT,' WOULD MAKE SURE FOSTER KIDS ARE GIVEN THE SERVICES THEY WERE PROMISED EVEN AFTER THEY AGE OUT OF THE SYSTEM.

“Before, the courts hands were tied, and the services were cut off so that’s why we call it ‘safe landings’ after you turn twenty-one it doesn’t mean that you’re set for life, particularly if you come from the foster care system,” said Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal (D-47th Senate District).

OTHER LAWMAKERS SAid THE legislation, IF SIGNED, WOULD EXTEND THE COURTS JURISDICTION BY A YEAR OR MORE-ALLOWING FOSTER KIDS GREATER TIME AND OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN IMPORTANT RESOURCES SUCH AS HOUSING.

“For youth who are aging out who are not getting the full receipts of the resources or housing that they were promised. This is a total game changer.  This is about youth who were in a traumatic situation who need to have a good solid transition,” said Sen. Jabari Brisport (D-25th Senate District).
