Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection accepting home water samples after flooding
UPDATE (8/26): More water sampling kits have been made available to residents impacted by flooding in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Test kits can be picked up at the Westfield Borough Assistance Trailer, according to the Tioga County Commissioners.
Once the tests are completed, residents should return them back to the trailer. The DEP will pick up the returned samples Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 12 p.m.
TIOGA COUNTY, PA. (WENY) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will be accepting residents home water sampling bottles Tuesday and Wednesday, the organization announced Monday.
Water sampling bottles can be dropped off at four locations in Tioga County, Pennsylvania between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on August 20 and 21:
- Harrison Valley Community Center, 112 East Tannery Street, Harrison Valley
- Crary Hose Company, 429 East Main Street, Westfield
- Knoxville Borough Office, 301 East Main Street, Knoxville
- Northern Potter School District Administrative Building, 745 Northern Potter Road, Ulysses
Water sampling is a practice that insures water is safe to drink. As many residents in Tioga County Pa. use well water to eat, drink and cook, the DEP is using the effort to ensure that ground water is safe to drink, after the flooding caused by Debby over a week ago.
If you have not received a water sample kit, they can be picked up at DEP's Northcentral Regional Office at 208 W. Third St. in Williamsport Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The kits can also be bought at feed stores and other suppliers.
The DEP will analyze the water and tell those who submitted samples whether the water is safe to drink. If it is deemed unsafe to drink, the DEP has outlined the approved way to sterilize home wells and springs:
