Public Hearing Held for Proposed Solar Panel Site in Lindley, NY
LINDLEY, NY (WENY) -- A 27-acre solar farm could soon be coming to the Town of Lindley. A public hearing was held by the Lindley Town Planning Board and almost everyone at the meeting opposed it.
"[It's a] proposed solar energy field at the Presho exit area. It's been ongoing for several months, [and the] public hearing [was a way for] the applicant [to] tell the public what their plans are, what the project is about, and then gather [feedback] from the public," said the Lindley Town Planning Board Assistant Chair, Willis Haar.
If the solar project were approved, it would be located at 9155 Smith Rd. in Lindley. It would be considered a community-scale solar field, where electricity would be fed into the grid and provided to area homes and businesses.
"We are proposing to purchase 27 acres of industrial land to reuse a portion of the land for placement of solar panels. That way, we will be able to use the energy on-site for future expansion [on] the project site... We’ve submitted a stormwater solution plan, a site plan, a land clearing plan, erosion and sediment control... [We're] hoping to have the least impact in the community. We submitted a visual assessment as well..." said the Manager for ESG Energy Holdings, LLC.
One considered resident said this is not something the Lindley community wants.
"I looked a little bit into this project and noticed that [it's] in prime farmland and prime farmland that has state interest. It also has endangered species on it... This also does not fall in our Lindley Comprehensive Plan, which we are a rural community and we want to stay rural. We don’t mind businesses coming in, but this is not a business. This is 25 years of an eye sore that Lindley is not welcome to," said town of Lindley resident, Jennifer Baker.
About four or five people were in favor of the solar panel project out of the 24 or so people at Monday night's meeting.
The initial plan included solar panels and an EV charging area. The current application that was presented on Monday, August 19th, only included the portion about the solar panels, but plans for the EV charging area could be added at a later time.
The Town of Lindley Planning Board will have 62 days to decide to approve, deny, or make ramifications to a conditional use permit. The next Town Planning Board meeting will be on September 16th at the Lindley Town Hall.
