CHICAGO, IL (WENY) -- A theme throughout the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago has been that of the role of women as decision makers, leaders, mothers, and more. At the center of it all - electing the first woman as President of the United States.

For New York State delegates from Corning, Hilda Lando and Margie Lawlor, they are hoping that his November will see the glass ceiling finally broken for women in the nation's highest elected office.

"There’s a really great energy around women here. And you know, being a woman and a leader inspires me because there are barriers, there are glass ceilings in this world and people who don’t warm up to a woman leader, and it’s heartening, and encouraging and inspiring to be around all these great women leaders and hear them speak, and be uplifted by them," said Lawlor.

The convention has featured a star-studded lineup of powerful women, from former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Oprah. All working to galvanize the democratic party to support Kamala Harris for President.

New York State delegate from Corning and current Steuben County Legislator Hilda Lando has been in public service for decades. Lando has served as a legislator for nearly 15 years; prior to that, she was a Corning City council person for nine years.

"It’s hard for a woman to run for office. When I first ran, people didn’t know it was me and just thought it was my husband or my brother in law; they didn’t know it was me. And it still goes on. We don’t have enough women in our legislature, we don’t have enough women in politics in general," Lando said.

Kamala Harris will close out night four of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday as she speaks as the party's nominee.
