WESTFIELD, P.A. (WENY) -- The Wyalusing Rams and the Cowanesque Valley Indians will take to the football field for a clash of Northern Tier rivals, but earlier today both teams came together along with their respective marching bands and cheerleaders to help with the cleanup efforts in Westfield.

Football players, marching band members, and cheerleaders took part in a day of cleanup and recovery efforts in the borough of Westfield, still reeling from the effects of flash flooding three weeks ago.

"I just think it's pretty nice that both teams can come together and clean up the town and go play a football game, said CV Center, Justin Schaar, " I think at the end of the day, even though we are rival teams, that we can all come together as a big family and just be peaceful with each other."

"A rivalry like on the court or like on the field doesn't always mean like you have to be rivals off the field. So it's kind of nice, it's like camaraderie, like helping each other out," remarked Rachel Wilson of the Wyalusing Marching Band.

Cleanup efforts took place all throughout the borough, with students of the opposing schools collaborating for a good cause.

"When the boys go on the field, they're competitive. But when we're here, we take all that off. You throw that away, don't even think about it," added Wyalusing cheerleader Chloie Whipple.

Competitive nature took a backseat to mud cleanup, debris removal, and farm repairs.

"It's interesting to see what all happened and how it affected the community. Really was devastation throughout the whole community. So good to help," stated CV Left Tackle/Defensive Tackle Luke Sottolano.

Even though they'll be on opposite sidelines, both schools were able to turn competition, into cooperation for a day of good will.

"We're excited about football, but it's always about more than football. I mean, it's about, um, the bonds that we share, not just among our own teams, but with whoever we're playing and sharing that field," said Jeff Hindman, Wyalusing assistant football coach.

While residents continue to pick up the pieces from the flooding, there's actions like these from the students of these schools along with their coaches and advisors that are helping to boost morale throughout the borough as they continue to rebuild.
