HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Village of Horseheads passed a new version of the sign law unanimously at the Board of Trustees meeting Thursday.

Back in March, the Village passed an amended sign law into effect that dictates how long, and where temporary signs can be placed in the Village.

In that version of the law, Horseheads said a portion of it was ill-written, allowing the rule to be interpreted that signs must be placed 30 feet from roadways. For most residents, that rule would be impossible. Horseheads suspended that portion of the law.

On Thursday the board passed a rewritten version, changing the rule so that temporary signs must be placed no less than 8 feet away from the roadway.

"What's being rectified here is the fact that as the previous law was passed, most of the people in the Village of Horseheads could not legally put up temporary signs. Now you can, and that's what we're doing here," Mayor Kevin Adams said at the meeting.

Now under the new law, temporary lawn signs displayed in residents lawns must be no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet, must be 8 feet back from a roadway and cannot be displayed for longer than 30 days.
