HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Horseheads Central School District's Board of Education approved new Elementary zoning for the next school year in a 6 to 3 vote Thursday night, in a meeting live streamed on the GST Boces website.

Board members approved zoning option B over option A, as the school district defines new Elementary boundaries with the closing of Center Street Elementary at the end of the current school year.

Under option B, Ridge Road Elementary absorbs most of Center Street's currently occupied area Northeast of Interstate 86, to Grand Central Avenue. Big Flats Elementary will extend its range south of the highway to the Orchard Knoll area, and also absorbs part of the Pine Valley and Catlin area West of NY-14 which is currently occupied by Ridge Road students. Gardner Road will extend its boundaries to the area surrounding Center St.

Under the approved plan, 329 students will change elementary schools. Of which, 40 students who never went to Center St. will have to switch schools as well.

Center Street is slated to close at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. However, the building will still be used. Ridge Road students and teachers will use the building for the 2025-2026 school year as the elementary school is slated to undergo repairs. The Center Street building will then be used as a district office at the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
