Wineglass Race Series happening this weekend in Steuben County
STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Wineglass Race Series kicks off this weekend with distances for runners of all levels. On Saturday, October 5th, will be the Williams Toyota 5k and Wineglass 8k while on Sunday, October 6th, the 43rd Guthrie Wineglass Marathon and Wegmans Half Marathon are happening.
Historically, runners train months ahead for the race, with some coming from across the country to participate. Experienced runners and medical professionals say that one of the keys to enjoying a race, it to pick a distance you are comfortable with.
"This is something that we have been planning a year for. We basically started planning right after last year's Wineglass Marathon, and we started talking about feedback as far as staffing and things like that. We actually have five medical tents along the course, and at each medical tent there are five or six physicians, and they'll have first aid, water," said Dr. Donald Phykitt, Guthrie Family Physician.
The Maraton on Sunday kicks off in Bath and ends in Market Street on Corning, while the half marathon begins in Campbell. Organizers say the Wineglass Marathon is a fast course, making it a great place to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
