CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Corning Police Department has received a donation of a bullet and stab-proof protective vest for its K9 Officer Mikey. The vest is was donated by Vested Interest In K9s, a nonprofit dedicated to providing protective gear for law enforcement dogs, Corning Police confirmed Monday. 

The vest is custom-fitted for Corning PD's K9 Mikey.

The donation program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement agencies. Each vest has a five-year warranty and is designed to fit dogs that weigh about 45 pounds.

To date, Vested Interest in K9s has donated 5,878 vests to service dogs in all 50 states.
