ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- Veterans Day ceremonies at Wisner Park and Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira were somber ones. People took the time to reflect on everything we have because of those who served, are currently serving, or sacrificed everything.

"Veterans raised that right hand, took an oath, and served this country. Veterans know the meaning of the word service and they know the meaning of the word sacrifice. We sacrificed time away from family and a lot of them sacrificed their life. So for that, we meet here today to thank all veterans for all they've done," said President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 803, Larry Sherman.

One girl who came to pay her respects said she was grateful for her uncles who served.

"They mean a lot to me... I love how they served our country and helped our country," said 13-year-old Gianna.

During and after the Vietnam War, people had a different perception of service members. Sherman said it took people 30 years to thank him for his service. He encourages people when they see a veteran, to be sure to thank them.

"It's nice to be a veteran and thanked... It was 30 years coming from the time the war ended until people started realizing that we were veterans. We only did what the government asked us to do, whether it was a good war or a bad war. It was nice to be thanked, especially when a child thanks me," said Sherman.

Sherman is also the Honor Guard Commander for the VVA Chapter 803. Even though his time in the service is years behind him, he continues to service his community by helping give other vets the military burials they deserve.

Sherman said as the days pass by, more and more veterans are dying, either by wars or of old age. He hopes more vets can get involved in helping keep military honors and services alive.
