Corning Gaffer District in second year of revised downtown lighting plan
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- As the holiday season approaches, communities are starting to get into the spirit of the season and decorate. Corning is one of those communities, and the Crystal City is in the second year of their reduced lighting plan on Market Street.
Last year, due to rising maintenance costs, the Corning Intown District Management Association decided to bump the number of lit trees along market street from 148 to 52. As part of a sustainable lighting program, this year, they're focusing on Centerway Square, crosswalks, and intersections.
"This year, we are in year two of a modified lighting plan for the trees on the street," said Coleen Fabrizi, the executive director of the Corning Intown District Management Association and the Corning Gaffer District. "We have hired a consultant who is going to come in and help us figure out the best path forward."
The consultant is a holiday lighting design firm that specializes in places like Downtown Corning. They've started their evaluations, looking for ways to make the display dazzling, but sustainable as well.
"The reason that we are in this place is that there are infrastructure concerns with regard to the lights in the trees and, quite honestly, the cost. It's a huge, huge cost. So I am very confident that these consultants are going to be able to help us figure out what the future looks like," said Fabrizi. "But I promise you, if you are here for a Crystal City Christmas, you will see it's a beautiful place to be and capture wonderful memories with family and friends."
Starting in January, the Gaffer District will be asking for public input about the light display. Corning has a lot of holiday activities to look forward to, like the 50th anniversary of Sparkle on December 7th, and visits with Santa in the Crystal House starting November 29th.
