Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler gives out Thanksgiving turkeys
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler County handed out close to 300 turkeys in a bid to make sure everyone has a Thanksgiving Dinner in the Southern Tier. Spread out over two donations in Schuyler and Chemung, close to 200 turkeys were given out in Elmira on Thursday, Nov. 21st.
"People are looking for more people to help than the people that we've been able to help. But I would encourage people to sign up for the Christmas one if they haven't done that already. So come right to the Samaritan Center. They can also do a pantry visit and get what they need for the holidays," said Katie Rhodes, marketing and development coordinator for Catholic Charities.
Struggling to put enough food on the table during the holidays is far from a unique problem for the Southern Tier. It's estimated that 47 million Americans face hunger, including one in five children.
