Tanglewood Tuesday: Meet Hank the Red-tailed hawk
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Meet Hank, a Red-tailed Hawk you can find at Tanglewood Nature Center!
The name "Red-tailed Hawk" dates back to a time before the color orange was named in the English language, as their tail feathers appear more orange than red.
Ryan Donnelly, who works closely with the center, explains that Red-tailed Hawks are among the most common birds of prey in the United States and can be found almost anywhere.
“We've had Hank for about 17 years now,” Donnelly shares. “You can see he's getting a little white around his eyes. He’s getting up there in age, but he still loves participating in programs [and] hanging out with us.”
In the wild, Red-tailed Hawks typically live for 10 to 15 years, but Donnelly says that the oldest known Red-tailed Hawk has lived up to 30 years!
These hawks primarily feed on small mammals, but also indulge in birds, reptiles, and other small creatures.
Tanglewood Nature Center offers a variety of educational programs and events for all age groups. This winter, they’re offering the "Winter Wiggles" program, where children can interact with the center’s animal ambassadors and more details will soon be announced.
