Chemung Co. Habitat for Humanity celebrates 35 years, new home build
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Habitat for Humanity has been a staple in the Chemung County for decades now. On Tuesday, the organization debuted a new build in Elmira, marking dozens of homes in a milestone 35 years.
This is clearly the epitome of what we get to do, but we get small wins and victories all the time. We do cleanup events and we get to work with families, with educating them on different topics. It's an amazing outpouring of gratitude from the community, so I love what I get to do it does seem like there's a big community impact for all the volunteers here," said Emily Barrett, the executive director of the Chemung County Habitat for Humanity.
Dozens of people flocked to the ribbon cutting for the new home, celebrating and welcoming the Habitat Family into the community. As part of Habitat's program, homeowners put in 200 hours of work on the home, and out in the community. The Elmira home's new owner, Emily, said she would be the first woman in her family to own a home.
Throughout a 35 year tenure in Chemung County, leaders say there has been a lot of positive impact in the community.
"Our inception was June of 1989 and since then we've done right near 40 houses. So we've had a really significant impact, I would say, and we look forward to doing double that number in the next 35 years," said Barrett.
