UPDATE 1/8: According to the Corning Fire Department, the cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, and began on the exterior of the home. 


UPDATE 1/3: The Corning Fire Department says Monday's apartment fire remains under investigation.

Fire Chief Brad Davies issued an update on Friday, saying all five people rescued from the upstairs apartment have been released from the hospital, and are expected to make a full recovery. Additionally, two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but have since been cleared and returned to duty.

In total, six people lived in the upstairs apartment, and two downstairs.

CORNING, NY (WENY) -- Multiple people, including small children were rescued from a burning apartment in Corning Monday morning.

Fire crews responded 11:45 Monday morning, for a reported fire at an apartment home on Chestnut Street with people possibly trapped in an upstairs apartment.

An eyewitness tells WENY News a small child jumped from a second story window to rescuers down below, and firefighters could also be seen removing three toddlers and a woman from the second story using a ladder. They were treated by EMS personnel on scene.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while trying to put out the blaze, according to the City of Corning.

The side entrance to the upstairs apartment could be seen completely charred from flames, and the building suffered heavy fire and smoke damage.

It's unknown at this time the cause of the fire, which is currently under investigation, or how many people lived in the duplex. 

The impacted residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
