Building catches fire at base of communications tower in Horseheads
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Smoke could be seen for miles Wednesday afternoon in the Horseheads after a fire near a communications tower.
The fire happened around 4:45 p.m. on the hill overlooking State Route 13 -- between the roundabouts on Old Ithaca Road and East Franklin Street.
According to the Town and Country Fire Department, the fire happened at an equipment shed at the base of the tower. The fire caused damage to telecommunications equipment housed inside the structure, and power to the building/tower had to be turned off.
The fire department said tankers had to shuttle water up the hill one tanker at a time due to the limited access road leading up the hill to the tower.
There are no injuries to report.
