ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The 'Welcome to Elmira' sign is set be torn down, and a new one put in its place.  The sign sits on East Church Street, right near I-86.

As it stands now, the sign features notable people from Elmira.  Among them are Mark Twain, Eileen Collins, Ernie Davis, Tommy Hilfiger, and more.  The sign is faded currently, and was vandalized in the past.  City officials say a new design is in the works, and features a more simple approach.

"We have designated money from American Rescue Plan funding that we're going to do a new welcome sign to the City of Elmira. We do have JH Design working on that. It will just be a welcome to Elmira sign, wrought iron sign, very similar to a sign that you would see when you enter Eldridge Park, or when you enter one side of the campus at Elmira College. It just is an archway," said Elmira City Manager Michael Collins.

The old sign will be torn down, and the new one will not feature any names or faces.  Collins says there's not a concrete timeline for when the new sign will be installed, but to keep an eye out this spring or summer.
