ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Fire crews are still on the scene after a massive fire tore through the former First Baptist Church on West Church Street late Thursday night. The blaze caused part of the historic building to collapse as firefighters worked to contain the flames.
The fire broke out shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, and the building became engulfed in flames. Multiple fire departments responded, including Elmira, Elmira Heights, Southport Volunteer, West Elmira, and the Elmira Police.
The church, built in the 1890s, held its last services in 2009. Chemung County property records indicate that it was sold in 2010.
As of Friday, February 14, road closures remain in effect around West Church Street as crews continue their work. Additionally, West Church St. from Railroad Ave. to North Main St. will be closed and expected to remain closed most of the day. Elmira Police Department said the public can still access the Post Office and the Elmira Transportation Center at 100 E. Church St.
This is a developing story, and WENY News will provide updates from authorities online and on air.
