(WENY) -- Well the winter blues can certainly have an impact on all of us, but that doesn't mean that they have to stop us from getting outside even if the cold winter is less inviting than the warmer seasons.

The cold weather may serve as a discouragement to some but many nearby state parks still offer several unique activities to help pass the time and get you out of the house.

One of the ways to keep track of various events and activities is through the Parks Mobile App -- it'll show the various hikes, maps, and hours for the parks and facilities that you're looking to visit.

Being prepared to face the elements is advised through wearing layers and waterproof shoes and winter gear.

Obeying the closure signs in parks remains a must as certain areas can tend to be more hazardous due to weather conditions.

The Office of Parks also says bringing a friend can enhance the experience and keep you coming back for more.

"If you start to feel you're out of your comfort zone, listen to your body, listen to your mind, and turn around and go back to a spot where you're more comfortable. These are not the type of sports or activities that you need to really push yourself to an outer limit for. You're out there to enjoy, to refresh yourself, get outside, breathe some fresh air and if you find yourself in a spot where you're not quite comfortable, it's perfectly okay to turn around and go back," remarked NYS Office of Parks Finger Lakes Regional Director, Fred Bonn.

It's encouraged to find activities and hobbies that you can enjoy without overexerting yourself -- especially when you're in an environment that body has not yet adjusted to.
