STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) --  Steuben County is marking March 6th as Black Balloon Day to honor those lost to overdose.

The nationwide annual event aims to raise awareness about the opioid crisis, focused on the symbolic black balloon.  The CDC says says overdose deaths have become the leading cause of accidental death in the United States.

In 2024, Steuben County reported 288 overdoses, down from 348 in 2023, but nine deaths were reported.
