Vietnam War Museum Receives Donation
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- Elmira's Vietnam War Museum received a generous donation Friday, in memory of a woman who passed away.
The donation totaling more than $1,800 was presented to museum president Dennis Wolfe at a veterans breakfast Friday morning at Curly's Chicken House in Horseheads. The money comes from a color run organized by Kati Stewart, who wanted to do something to honor her late sister, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 25.
"I decided in want to put something together in memory of her, so we did a color walk/run up on Jerusalem Hill, and we raised a little close to $4,000. We split it between Denny [the Vietnam War museum], and we gave it to the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, and we also did Chemung SPCA, actual non-monetary donations, like blankets, dog food and cat food and that type of stuff," Stewart explained.
Kati said she and her sons first met Denny Wolfe last year, at the Elmira Memorial Day Parade. Kati said they had set up in front of the museum to watch the parade, and Denny invited her sons to help set up chairs for veterans before the parade came down Davis Street. During the parade, Wolfe took the time to explain to the boys the different military vehicles and service members participating in the parade. Kati said it was watching his interaction with her children, along with her family's appreciation for veterans that made it an easy choice to donate some of the funds raised in her sister's memory to the Vietnam War Museum.
"The outreach from the community here has been outstanding over the years, for the Vietnam War museum. And we've never been quite so touched as to have this official designation today because of Kati's sister. And one of the things that we've always done is to help one another as veterans. That's what this group is all about," Wolfe said.
The funding will be used to help support the Vietnam War Museum, which is located at 1200 Davis Street in Elmira. Veterans are also invited to a support group at the museum, each Friday morning at 9AM.
