ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A former Elmira Police Chief who served in the late 1980's and early 90's has died.

Joseph Michalko passed away at home on March 1, according to his obituary. He was 86.

Michalko started his career with the Elmira Police Department in 1961, rising through the ranks until he was appointed Chief of Police in August of 1988. He retired from the department as Chief in May of 1996 after a 35-year career with EPD.

"While no current members of the Elmira Police Department had the privilege of serving alongside him, many retired officers who did have shared their deep admiration for his leadership, integrity, and the respect he earned from those under his command. His impact on this department and the community he served will not be forgotten," Elmira Police wrote on Facebook.

Michalko was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran. He was in the service for two years after graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1956.

He was buried with military honors in a private service at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery on Friday.

Michalko is survived by wife, Alyce.
