Hundreds come together in the Village of Horseheads for the 20th Annual Saint Patrick's Parade
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Music filled the streets, candy flew through the air, and people came together to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. The Village of Horseheads was filled with cheer as hundreds came out to celebrate the 20th Annual Saint Patrick's Parade.
Each year, people from Horseheads and members of surrounding communities come to Hanover Square to celebrate the traditional Irish holiday.
A variety of local businesses and organizations created floats and displays for people of all ages to enjoy. From marching bands to Celtic dancers, the Horseheads Saint Patrick's Parade has a little something for everyone. Some even said it was the perfect day for the traditional event to take place.
"I think the sun says it best," said Village Mayor Kevin Adams. "We got the sun coming down. It's warming up a little bit. We've got families lining up. It's going to be great. I mean, we have so many floats, so many groups participating. I think we're going to have just as many people in the parade as attending the parade. This is a huge event and we don't even -- It's not even cold out. It's not even cold out. We're just feeling it right now."
This year marked a special anniversary for the Village Parade and, while there were some new faces, traditions remained the same.
Candy was tossed to attendees lining the streets of the parade route, first responders decked out their emergency vehicles, and The Ring of Chiarraighe Celtic Dancers brought their best moves to the streets.
"I think it's such a unique thing that you don't see everywhere," said Mikaelie Stedge, one of the dancers from The Ring of Chiarraighe Celtic Dancers. "It's like so fun to do, just everything with it and all the like, performances that we go to, it's really fun."
Whether you're Irish or not, officials and organizers welcomed people from all over the region to the annual parade.
Kids and their families finished off the event by gathering in Hanover Square to take one last look at every float, car, and performance that traveled their way. One group of young attendees shared that they had plenty of fun, got a lot of candy, and wished everyone a Happy Saint Patrick's Day.
