PAINTED POST, NY (WENY) -- Meet Cameron and Cali, WENY’s Pet of the Week from the Pawz and Purrz Animal Rescue!

Both Cameron and Cali are 13-week-old siblings, and were originally believed to be a mix of border collie and beagle but now appear to have some basset hound traits as well.

"They've started their vaccinations and we're hoping to get them into the vet for their rabies shots this week," Susan said.

While the puppies get along well, Cali may do best as an only pet due to some possessive behaviors, though she shares a close bond with her brother. Both have the high energy expected of puppies and are currently eating a diet of puppy chow with some canned food in the mornings and evenings.

Given their herding instincts, Susan advised caution when placing them in homes with small children.

"They do have little sharp teeth and may nip at ankles, which is part of their natural behavior," she explained. However, with proper training and time, they are expected to adjust well.

For those looking to support Pawz and Purrz Animal Rescue, the organization is hosting a chili cook-off at the American Legion in Addison on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature a variety of entertainment, auction items, a 50/50 raffle, baked goods, and additional snacks for purchase.

"It's five dollars at the door, which allows you to judge the People's Choice chili. Entry into the competition is $10, and we have cash prizes and trophies for the winners," said Brenda Boynton from the rescue center.

More details about the event and adoption opportunities can be found at pawzandpurrz.org or on their Facebook page.
