(WENY) -- Over the weekend, wildfires were reported across Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, but they were contained by the late evening of Sunday, March 9th. With fires also happening in the Twin Tiers to a much lesser extent, one local emergency services director is reminding people to respect the burn ban.

Steuben County's Director of Emergency Services warns residents, "Please be aware that a burn ban is in effect between March and May," says Director of Public Safety Tim Marshall. "If you need to dispose of items, it’s best to use waste disposal areas for safe disposal."

The state typically enforces a burn ban from mid-March to mid-May. Due to the unusually warm weather expected in the coming days, conditions remain very dry, and it is advised that residents refrain from burning anything until the burn ban is lifted in May, according to Marshall.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. on Monday, March 10th, the National Weather Service issued a statement warning of an elevated risk of fire spread through Tuesday, March 11th.
