ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Police Department is investigating an "incident" after human remains were found in an unmarked grave at Woodlawn Cemetery Monday evening.

According to Elmira Police, officers were called out to Woodlawn Cemetery because staff at Woodlawn reported that human remains were discovered in an unmarked grave. Police said the discovery was made during the "course of normal business" for staff at the cemetery.

Once investigators arrived, the Elmira Police Department's Evidence Response Team responded to help. Police said that the remains were determined to be from a human, but the remains are connected to a newly discovered incident that happened "from years past".

The police department said the discovery is an isolated incident, and it's under investigation. Nothing further will be released at this time.
