City of Elmira to consider allowing Water Board to move locations

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Water Board could be moving to a new location soon. The water board is currently on West Water Street by College Ave, and there will be a public hearing to discuss a move to a new office space.
The city would have to change the city charter to make this move possible. The public hearing is a chance for residents to give their input on the decision. Since the water board falls under a government entity, officials say its up to city council to make the decision.
Mayor Dan Mandell says there are a variety of reasons why the water board wants this change.
"They wanted a new office building, something that was closer to their campus, where the filtration plan is that it's ought to be more convenient for customers as far as access. They would have a drive through over there. They just feel that the building they live now has outlived its purpose and they're ready to move on from that building," said Mayor Mandell.
Mandell says if this move is approved, the currently location on West Water Street would be a city property, meaning it could go up for sale and be back on the tax roll. The public hearing will be held during the next city council meeting, which is March 24th at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.
