New York warns E-ZPass text message scams are on the rise

NEW YORK (WENY) -- New York State has been warning residents that there has been a rise in E-ZPass text message scams. Residents across New York and right here in the Twin Tiers have reported getting text messages attempting to collect what they are road tolls.
Authorities say these texts often come from an international number. According to New York State, E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail will never send a text or email requesting sensitive personal information. That includes credit card, birthday, Social Security number or other personally identifiable information.
If you are unsure about a message you received, call E-ZPass directly at 1-800-333-8655 or Tolls by Mail at 1-844-826-8400.
If you receive text message of any kind that you think is a scam, contact the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection Consumer Assistance Helpline at 1-800-697-1220, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm; excluding State Holidays.
Consumer fraud complaints may also be filed at the Federal Trade Commission website at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
You can also report scam phone calls or text messages to local police.
