Cornell analysis: NY population increased, Southern Tier population decreased
NEW YORK, (WENY) -- Cornell University released a population analysis for New York State based upon 2024 U.S. Census data, and while there was good news for the state as a whole, it was a different story for the Southern Tier. According to the analysis, the Southern Tier saw the steepest rate of losses in the state, while New York City saw the biggest gains.
In the Southern Tier, Steuben County and Schuyler County saw the biggest losses. Steuben lost roughly 1500 people, Schuyler lost over 750 compared to 2023.
As a result, it is now estimated that just under 630,000 people live in the Southern Tier. It was better news for the rest of New York however, which saw a .7 percent population increase, with roughly 19.8 million people living in the state.
The Finger Lakes region saw a .22 percent increase for roughly 1.2 million people.
