ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will open on April 15. This program is designed to help low-income households in New York by providing free air conditioners and installation services. The initiative specifically targets households with older adults, young children, or individuals with medical conditions that are worsened by extreme heat.

To qualify for the program, households must meet specific income requirements and include at least one member who is under the age of six, over the age of 60, or has a heat-sensitive medical condition. For example, a family of four with an annual income of up to $76,681 may be eligible for assistance.

Funding for the program is limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. It is expected to last through early June, with the goal of having air conditioning units installed before the peak of summer heat. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this program in protecting vulnerable residents, stating that it ensures New Yorkers can stay safe and healthy in their homes during the summer months.

Over the past five years, HEAP has provided assistance to more than 87,000 households, helping them stay cool during extreme heat. For more information about the program or to apply, residents are encouraged to contact their local social services office.
