April is National Donate Life Month: Celebrating Organ Donation Through David Webster’s Journey
(WENY) -- April is recognized as National Donate Life Month, a time to honor the generosity of organ donors and raise awareness about the profound impact of organ donation.
For individuals like David Webster, a heart transplant recipient, this month is a heartfelt celebration of a second chance at life.
"I was suffering from heart failure where I was having trouble breathing, shortness of breath," says David Webster, Heart Recipient. "After three days I decided to go to Robert Packer Hospital and they told me my heart was pumping at 15 percent when it needed to be at 86 percent. So I was given a heart cath and turned up nothing."
Every year, this month highlights the vital importance of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor. According to Donate Life America, more than 100,000 people are currently waiting for transplants in the U.S., with each awaiting recipient representing a unique and powerful story, much like David’s.
After several surgeries, Webster's family was told, he was in bad shape and wouldn't be around for more than another week. Webster says, it was by chance and a miracle that a donor's heart became available, one that saved his life.
"Matthew saved three others lives beside mine. You know she got someone in New Jersey got the kidney and someone in Cleveland got the lungs. But you know, one person could save up to eight lives and enhance 75 others," explains Webster.
Matthew's mom had the chance to meet Webster and listen to her son's heartbeat in David's chest. A visit that Webster says was amazing and a kind way to help Matthew's family find comfort, as she felt and listened to her son's heartbeat.
Every year, Donate Life Month emphasizes the critical importance of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor. According to Donate Life America, more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are currently awaiting a transplant, each representing a unique story like David's.
"There's nothing like being able to help someone as you pass away someone else to go on living. You know someone else to be able to see the tissues that can be used for, for instance, reconstructive surgery for breast cancer survivors or firefighters that can gain from skin graft. It's amazing what they can do and you're never too old," said Webster.
The mission of this month is to encourage individuals to say “yes” to donation and to honor those who have made this decision. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 others through tissue and cornea donation.
Becoming a donor is simple. You can register at the DMV, sign up online, or check the box when renewing your license. For David, this decision represents a lasting legacy. To learn more about organ donation or to register, visit this link.
