Turning Unwanted Items into Repurposed Goods
CORNING, NY (WENY) -- With Earth Day on April 22nd and nicer weather on the way, you might be doing some spring cleaning. Depending on what it is, you might be able to donate things instead of throwing them out.
"It’s great to donate here because all the proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity and help build homes in Steuben County. You’re also helping divert all the items from the landfill," said Corning ReStore Manager, Jonathan Wylie.
Wylie said the Corning ReStore helps prevent about 715,000 lbs of waste from going to a landfill. The ReStore in Corning opened in 2008 but was forced to close because of devastating fire in 2023. It was able to reopen last August.
He said if you're looking for household items, the ReStore has second-hand furniture, home goods, lighting, appliances, and even paint.
"We have GreenSheen Paint and that’s 100% recycled. They have collection points across the country and we do buy that and resell it here. Again, that keeps the paint leftovers out of the landfill and [it's] repurposed yet again," said Wylie.
The proceeds from the ReStore go towards helping the organization support families in our area.
"Since we re-opened [after] the fire, the sales have helped generate funds to dedicate two homes in our area. [It was the] 40th [total] house [dedication] for Steuben County Habitat for Humanity," said Wylie.
The Corning ReStore is located on State Route 414 and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
During weekdays (Monday through Friday), volunteers and employees can pick up items from people's homes for those who might not be able to fit certain items in their cars or aren't able to travel/drive. Wylie said this service is more so for things like large furniture, appliances, etc. Please call (607)-377-5524 to schedule a pick-up.
"By donating here, it keeps [things] out of the landfill. So, if you’re done with your dining room table/furniture or your couch, we want [you] to bring it here [so we can] repurpose it and give it another life," said Wylie.
