CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The proposed budget for the Corning-Painted Post School District 2025-2026 school year is $146,804,840.  It comes with a 7.89% tax levy increase.

School board officials say because of inflation, rising health insurance costs, interest on outstanding debt and other reasons, this tax increase is necessary.  They say without the increase, students and staff would lose essential resources. In a presentation, the school business official cited:

This means taxes will go up roughly $180 on a home valued at $200,000.  The proposed tax levy increase is over New York State's 3.23% limit, so this budget will need a super majority to pass.  60% of voters will need to vote to approve the budget, or else risk falling to a contingency budget.

The school board voted to approve the tentative budget Wednesday night.

In next steps, there is a public hearing on Tuesday May 13th at 6:30 in the C-PP High School cafeteria.  The vote for the budget is set to take place on May 20th, and polls are open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
