Friday Morning Shooting Incident Involving Elmira Police Officers Under Investigation
12:30PM UPDATE: Elmira police released information on Friday morning's officer-involved shooting.
According to EPD, officers were dispatched to an apartment on the 300 block of East Water Street just after 4:30AM, for a disturbance where a female could be heard screaming. When officers arrived, they could hear the female crying inside the residence.
When officers made contact with the female victim, they said she told them a male had assaulted her and held her against her will, and he had an injury to her leg.
Police say the male at the residence denied the female's account, but also learned the female had an valid Order of Protection against the male. EPD says they allowed the male to gather some clothing before leaving, but then he grabbed what appeared to be a handgun from a bed. EPD says officers told the male several times to drop the handgun and leave the bedroom, but he refused. One of the officers then discharged their Taser, which was ineffective and the male went into a closet.
According to police, when the male came out of the closet he pointed the handgun at the officers, to which an officer fired a shot at the male, hitting him. The male suffered life-threatening injuries; police say he was stable and alert as of 11:30AM.
Police say no other information will be released at this time. They say the incident was isolated, and there are no public safety concerns. East Water Street is now back open to traffic.
No officers were injured during the incident.
