Chemung Co. Celebrates Older Americans Month with Prom-Inspired Fun and Volunteer Honors

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – Chemung County is honoring its older residents with two events during Older Americans Month, celebrating community, connection, and the power of giving back.
Today, Notre Dame High School will host “A Day to Remember” a senior prom-inspired event bringing together the Class of 2026 and older adults from around the community. The event will feature music, dancing, and lunch, with a focus on building relationships.

Then on Wednesday, May 14th at 2:00 p.m., the county will hold its Older Americans Month Celebration at New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Elmira.
Three local residents will be honored with the Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing their years of unpaid service and dedication to others. A proclamation from County Executive Chris Moss will also be read, officially recognizing May as Older Americans Month in Chemung County.
Older Americans Month has been celebrated nationally since 1963 as a time to acknowledge the contributions of older adults and promote their continued inclusion in the community.
