CANISTEO, NY (WENY) -- The Chief of Police for the Canisteo Police Department in Steuben County has resigned, following an investigation into allegations of official misconduct.

New York State Police say Chief Kyle Amidon resigned his position on Thursday, and also pleaded guilty in Steuben County court to one county of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the second degree. As a result, he was sentenced to a one year conditional discharge, which means the court will issue no further punishment as long as Amidon commits no further offenses during that time. He also paid restitution in the amount of $13,378.57.

Amidon was placed on administrative leave in May of 2024. According to NYSP, a joint investigation was launched after the Canisteo Mayor and board of trustees received an anonymous letter.

A state police investigation launched shortly after uncovered potential misconduct, involving falsified time sheets, and irregularities related to the Canisteo Police Club, which Amidon founded and managed.

According to state police, the case was also reviewed by the New York State Comptroller's Office, in consultation with the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office, for potential federal charges.

Schuyler County District Attorney Joe Fazzary was appointed special prosecutor in the case, reviewing evidence and charges related to misconduct, financial impropriety, and timekeeping fraud. The case was not prosecuted by the Steuben County District Attorney's Office, due to a conflict of interest.

Amidon served as Chief of Police in Canisteo since 2017, and had been a member of the department since 2013. He also served as a part-time police chief for the village of North Hornell, since 2021. As of May 9, he remains listed as the chief for the North Hornell PD.
