DRYDEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Dryden Central School District issued a statement on Tuesday, May 13th regarding a student that overdosed on a vaping device that was laced with fentanyl.

In the statement Dryden CSD stated that a student collapsed after inhaling one time on what they believed to be a marijuana vaping device.

"The Dryden Central School District was recently notified by a District in our region that a student was using what they believed to be a marijuana vape. The student indicated that they had inhaled once on the vape."

Multiple doses of NARCAN were administered before the student was transported to a local hospital for recovery.

Testing showed that the vape contained fentanyl, and was purchased at an unlicensed convenience store not legally permitted to sell marijuana products.

"We understand that students look for businesses that sell marijuana 'under the table' because they are not of age to purchase it from a dispensary," the statement read. Concerns remain present regarding illegally sold substances such as marijuana, which can be laced with fentanyl.

Dryden CSD has followed up with law enforcement and the situation remains under investigation by the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office. At this time it is unknown where the vape was purchased from.
