ELMIRA (WENY) -- A local VFW post is planning to build a park for veterans on Keefe Street on Elmira's southside.

At Monday night's Elmira City Council meeting, city leaders agreed to give official ownership of Keefe Street to the Rex Field Post 901.

Previously, the VFW owned just a portion of the street where they built a parking lot.

To build the park, the VFW must be given control of the state-owned land next to the street.

The veterans are hoping the state will sell them the land for maybe a dollar or just donate it for a good cause.
